Mr. Maffitt started his career in 1981 in the Gas Supply Department of Canadian Western Natural Gas Company Limited and Northwestern Utilities Limited where he was involved in gas supply planning, transportation and joint interest. In 1986, he joined Canada Northwest Energy Limited and was later appointed to the position of Manager of Gas Marketing & Supply. While at Canada Northwest, Mr. Maffitt negotiated contracts for a number of direct sales, cogeneration projects and the sale of production located in Italy. In April 1990, Mr. Maffitt formed Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants Inc. and has since provided marketing advice to a number of local small producers, marketing consultants and cogeneration projects. Mr. Maffitt has also been an instructor at numerous seminars sponsored by Petroleum Accountants Society of Canada, The Petroleum Society of CIM, Petroleum Joint Venture Association, Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accountants through Mount Royal College and SAIT, Insight Educational Services, InfoTech, and the University of Calgary Management Marketing Association.

Mr. Maffitt is a professional engineer and holds memberships in the Petroleum Society of CIM, APEGGA, PJVA and NGMAC. His company is also a member of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Petroleum Communication Foundation, Canadian Institute of Energy, Energy Risk Management Association of Canada and SEPAC. Dave is a volunteer member of the PCF's Speakers' Bureau and the SEPAC Natural Gas Committee.

Mr. Maffitt graduated from the Masters of Business Administration (Marketing Major) program at the University of Calgary in December 1996.

Ms. MacPhee joined Phoenix in 1995 as Administrative Assistant. In 1997, Ms. MacPhee became the Manager, Administration and Manager, Education Services. In 2007, Ms. MacPhee began her role as the Marketing Analyst, Advisory Services.    

A finance company and two oil and gas service companies previously employed Ms. MacPhee. Ms. MacPhee studied at Okanagan University in the Business Administration Department majoring in management and accounting.

Ms. Maffitt joined Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants Inc. in November 1998, after nine years of providing front-line support and training for engineering and exploration software.

Ms. Maffitt graduated from the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. in Mineral Process Engineering. She is a Professional Engineer and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.

A mainstay of Ms. Maffitt’s philosophy is that using a computer should not be difficult. With the proper training and software that fits the user’s needs, anyone should be able to effectively use a computer.

Ms. Powell joined Phoenix in 2007 as Administrative Assistant.   She brought with her 10+ years of Administrative and Management skills.  Ms. Powell’s administrative role encompasses every aspect involved in the day to day operations at Phoenix.

Ms. Powell was previously employed as an Office Manager for both a Chiropractor and a Construction Company.  In 1997 Ms. Powell graduated with Honor’s from the Administration program at SouthWestern College in London, Ontario.

Ms. Brumwell brings with her almost twenty years of oil and gas experience working in various capacities within the industry, including four years in the credit department at Gulf Canada Resources. She then worked in the Production Accounting department of several companies including Amoco Canada, Merland Explorations, D&S Petroleum Consulting Group, Murphy Oil, Placid Oil, and Remington Energy, first as an Assistant and later as a Production Accountant. Most recently, Ms. Brumwell worked as a Marketer for Canor Energy Ltd., Inuvialuit Petroleum Company, Samson Canada, Ocelot Energy and Star Oil & Gas.

Ms. Brumwell has supplemented her oil and gas experience with a variety of courses in the fields of computers, gas marketing and royalty simplification.

G. Ron Crosby, B.A. (Math) – Senior Associate, Advisory Services, NGL & Sulphur Specialist

Mr. Crosby started his career in the petroleum industry in 1979 with Petro-Canada Exploration, as a short/long term planner, subsequently transferred into operations. In 1981, he joined a major marketing company, Stillings Canada Petroleum Company, as a Marketing Representative. This company subsequently became Canstates Energy. In 1984, he re-joined Petro-Canada Inc. holding various positions from Marketing Representative for Butane and Sulphur (Domestic and International sales), Marketing Representative for Propane, Transportation Supervisor for all Natural Gas Liquids, and finally as Crude Oil and Field Liquids Supply Coordinator. In 1993, he formed CalKel Enterprises, a Marketing "Support Services" company, which provides Natural Gas Liquids consulting advice and direction, as well as assessing strategies and negotiating contracts.

Christina G. Grant - Associate, Advisory Services, Crude Oil Specialist

Mrs. Grant brings with her close to ten years of experience in the oil and gas industry.  The last six years spent working in various capacities relating to the marketing of Crude Oil and NGL's.  She started with Newport Petroleum in the Engineering department.   When Newport was bought out by Hunt Oil Company of Canada she moved over to the Marketing department in the capacity of Marketing Analyst.  Within a year she then took the position of Marketing Representative and was responsible for all of HOCC's Crude, NGL's, Sulphur and Gas on the Alliance pipeline.  In the past two years Mrs. Grant was employed by Streamline Energy in the same capacity she comes to Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants in.

Mrs. Grant completed the certificate program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for Petroleum Engineering Technology in 1999.

Jared C. Layton, B.Mgt, MBA - Associate, Advisory Services, Crude Oil Specialist

Jared Layton began his career in May, 2001 with Reliant Energy Services Canada, where he was involved in various business development initiatives involving the deregulation of electricity in the province of Alberta.  Following the demise of merchant energy trading, in the fall of 2002 Mr. Layton began consulting for a consortium of small, privately-held companies, where he was responsible for financial modelling, operations and project due diligence.  The consortium’s primary interests consisted of shallow gas production, electricity generation development, retail electricity and various real estate holdings throughout Western Canada and the U.S.   

In April, 2004 Mr. Layton joined the Balancing Pool, where he was responsible for the real-time financial operations of 2,000 MW thermal capacity in Alberta, as well as the natural gas account balancing for gas-fired generation units.  In the summer of 2005, Mr. Layton joined Enbridge Pipelines as a member of the Oil Sands Business Development group, where he was involved with economic modelling, asset management and negotiations for the development of pipeline and tank initiatives in the Athabasca region. In September, 2006, Mr. Layton joined Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants Inc. where he provides crude oil marketing advice to Phoenix’s local junior producers and trust clients.   

Mr. Layton completed his Bachelor of Management (2001) degree, with an International Business concentration at the University of Lethbridge, and is in the process of completing a Masters of Business Administration (2007) at the Edinburgh School of Business, Heriot Watt University, UK. 


Peter D. Saunders, MBA - Senior Associate, Advisory Services, Natural Gas Specialist

Mr. Saunders has over 25 years of experience in the petroleum industry. He started his career as a Systems Analyst with NOVA Corporation’s System Planning Department in July 1981. Later Mr. Saunders moved on to join Pan-Alberta Gas Ltd., where he learned the basics of dispatching and allocating the flow of natural gas for multiple gas producing companies.

As the industry began to change, and direct sales of natural gas from individual producers to individual end users became more and more popular, Mr. Saunders went to work for Petro-Canada as a direct sales analyst. Here he learned how to transport natural gas not only through the Province of Alberta, but into Eastern Canada as well, and eventually into the United States.

When natural gas deregulation came into play in 1987, Mr. Saunders became a Marketing Transportation Analyst for Methon Gas Marketing Ltd. He was not only involved in the usual dispatching of gas, but was also involved in price discovery and numerous regulatory issues. Methon was eventually sold to Bow Valley Industries and from there he went to work for Paramount Resources Ltd.

At Paramount, Mr. Saunders became a Manager of Marketing and was in charge of a small marketing department. Mr. Saunders was involved in the hedging of futures commodity prices for both natural gas and oil. Mr. Saunders primary experience is in natural gas, but he has had exposure to the marketing of NLG’s and oil as well. When Paramount Resources created its first royalty trust company, Paramount Energy Trust, he was sent there to be the Manager of Marketing.

Mr. Saunders has recently incorporated his own company, Gas Management Service, Inc.

Mr. Saunders achieved a Diploma in Petroleum (Reservoir) Technology from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1981. He later completed the Canadian Securities Course in 1993 and the Canadian Options Course in 1997. Mr. Saunders acquired a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary in the spring of 2006.


Mary-Lou B. Zimmer, BComm - Senior Associate, Advisory Services, Natural Gas Specialist

Ms. Zimmer began her career in 1985 at Atcor Ltd. in the Gas Marketing Accounting Department where she was involved in developing a general pool concept that was essential in meeting contractual obligations held and accounting for third party natural gas purchases and sales to large Alberta industrial markets. In 1988, she joined Poco Petroleums Ltd. and held various positions during her four-year stay including pipeline coordination on ten pipelines, development of a computerized gas marketing system, purchases of short and long-term natural gas supply in three provinces and negotiation of short and long-term sales arrangements across North America. In 1991, Ms. Zimmer joined Summit Resources Limited as a Marketing Representative where she later became the Marketing Manager before she moved on to establish a marketing department in 1994 at a junior has producer called Petromet Resources Limited. In 1998, Ms. Zimmer departed and began consulting with Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants Inc, and other various companies.

Ms. Zimmer obtained her Bachelor of Commerce degree with distinction in 1985 from the University of Alberta and also has received a Certified Management Accountant designation (CMA) in 1987. She has served on various industry committees including NOVA Tolls, Tariffs and Procedures Committee and the CAPP NOVA Committee.
